"Den ticha"
Hluchota a částečné vady sluchu byly posledním článkem zapadajícím do série jednotlivých postižení. První aktivita nás přímo uvedla do problémů neslyšících.

"Day of silence"
Deafness and partial hearing loss was the last part belonging to the series of disabilities we were dealing with. This day was lead by professional external trainers with a lot of experience in this area. The very first activity represented the real problems of deaf people. Our task was to make groups without using words, using only pantomime. Each of us got the paper with one word he or she was supposed to pantomime. We were moving around the room and we were looking for other members of our group. This introductory activity showed us how difficult it is to communicate with someone without words. The next activity was really interesting, at least from my point of view. Every participant got a sticker on his forehead. All the stickers were white but one was grey. Our task was the division into groups again, again without words. We were helplessly going around the room, we were looking at each other and we tried to make the groups somehow. What do you think happened with the man who was wearing the only grey label? Was he alone? Or did the group accept him into the team? In our case, this man stayed alone. This was the bad solution. Consequently, we have realized that when the person is different from the others – by disabilities, the color of skin, opinions – we cannot leave him alone and exclude him from the society. Everybody can contribute with his opinions on something and it is not right to reject these “different” people. The right thing is to integrate these people and take them into our community.

The next part of day was the interactive presentation about basic information about deafness, deaf people and solutions of their problem. We have learnt, for example, about cochlear implants that allow deaf people to hear. We saw several videos about children or adolescent who have had the implant inserted and we witnessed their first reactions when they heard something for the first time in their lives. These videos were really authentic and for all the participants it was really a strong emotional experience. We also discussed the individual ways of communication for deaf people. We have learnt individual words and sentences in sign language or finger alphabet by game. The interesting fact was that the sign language and finger alphabet are different for different nations.
Finally, we tried deafness in practice. Firstly, the partial deafness, when we were “deaf” for one ear for several hours and later the complete deafness when we simulated being “deaf” and tried to communication with each other in pairs; whether by using sign language, finger alphabet or reading lips.

As we tried what it was like to be hard of hearing during lunch, we wanted to give it a go at what it is like to be visually impaired during dinner. It was a lot of fun but above all, it gave us a valuable insight into the daily difficulties that the visually impaired people have to battle throughout their lives and thus has given us a huge amount of empathy with the blind.

Thursday was ended by the Night of Prejudices. Each nation picked one of other nations and the task was to prepare short theatrical scene which should reflect prejudices against this nation, its way of thinking and the overall functioning of the nationality. I have to say that cultural differences between nations are really big and it was interesting to see these theatre scenes. We had really a lot of fun during this activity!
